Joshua, what’s the story behind your number 1 photo?
Standing in awe of a volcanic eruption in Iceland, captured in the early hours of July 28th, 2023, at Lítli-Hrútur. After a 10km hike through the night, I finally reached the eruption site at around 1am and sat there for hours, mesmerised by the view before me. The crater hissed and thundered, shooting fountains of lava into the night sky. Around 3:30am, the first hint of dawn began to appear. The sky shifted from deep blue to crimson and for the next two hours, Iceland put on a show unlike anything I have ever witnessed.
This image was taken shortly after 5am, as the sun finally peaked over the distant mountains. Its golden light broke through the smoke and ash, illuminating the plumes that swirled above the crater and casting a surreal glow across the lava fields. The result was a scene of raw, untamed beauty that felt almost otherworldly.
