Clive, what’s the story behind your number 1 photo?
Having been asked recently for my personal favourite photograph, I have found myself agonising long and hard as to what to choose
Do I choose a photograph that I'm happy with and one that our industry and my peers associate me with, or do I do what I've been asked and provide the one I really do love.
So, I went with my heart and here is my all time favourite image.
It shows Stoffel Vandoorne in his Mclaren during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2017 and demonstrates a photographic technique that I had (and have) tried many times (prior to and subsequently) to perfect (and still haven't)!!!
Contrary to public belief, it's a single exposure and no photoshop trickery was employed. No layers, no multiple exposures, just a frame shot at 1/1 sec at F22 at 200 ISO on a 300mm F2.8 lens mounted on a monopod.
Its still not perfect, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the closest I can get to perfect. I have tried many times since to replicate it with other cars and drivers and have, to a large extent, succeeded, but this frame has an extra something. The way the lights on the sterns of all the boats moored in the harbour trackside, have created such wonderful, wavy and colourful lines make me very happy.
I have no allegiance to the Belgian driver or McLaren and secretly would have loved for it to be a Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes, as at the time, McLaren were largely quite unsuccessful. Now however, I'd be delighted.
